KENNEDY WIRE ROPE & SLING

At Kennedy Wire Rope & Sling Co. Inc. we offer plate lifting clamps, used for transferring plate material effectively and safely. Horizontal lifting clamps are particularly helpful when you are trying to move material, you’ve guessed it… in a horizontal direction. Meanwhile, the same logic applies for moving material using vertical clamps. In order to best handle a lifting task safely when using these types of plate lifting clamps, we are providing you below with some tips to consider.

How Clamps Work

First off, here’s a little background about the science behind clamps. With a vertical clamp, you can easily lift objects such as stainless steel sheets, structures or profiles straight up. Quality clamps are designed in such a way that the clamp will not slip when a lifting force has been applied. In fact, when you are lifting a load, the clamping force is actually increased by the load’s weight. In the same fashion, horizontal clamps used to transport steel plates from one side to the next are made to firmly hold your loads while they are being lifted.

Safety Steps

Be sure to lock your clamp closed before you lift your load. That is the number one item that should be on your list. Do not lift the load with the lock in the open position. Moreover, make sure to utilize hooks with the latch, and do not use a hook that might release the clamp. Please not that it is recommended to avoid using large-capacity clamps for the purpose of lifting light loads.

Balance & Capacity

Make sure you use a sufficient number of clamps to balance your load: do not lift any loads that have not been balanced. Use clamps within their rated capacities, and don’t overload them. Before you commence with a lift, you may want to inspect your clamp, following all of the inspection instructions along with the maintenance instructions to ascertain proper use of your equipment

Knowledge & Safety

When using a clamp, avoid side loading. Generally, don’t lift from the side using a vertical clamp, and do not lift horizontally with a vertical clamp. At Kennedy Wire Rope & Sling Co., we encourage you to know exactly what you’re doing before using a clamp; rather, know when to use the right clamp for the job. In addition, do not alter any clamp you use, which includes not grinding, welding or modifying your clamp. If you have any questions about your clamps, please do not hesitate to contact us for guidance.
